A Jelly Sandwich that Looks Yummy Enough to Eat

When I first started seeing swatches of OPI’s Skyfall collection, I immediately made a list of the colors that I wanted.  They are all absolutely gorgeous (especially that Man with The Golden Gun!!!) but on a college student’s budget I had to be smart, so I chose my two favorites and purchased them as soon as I could find them.  I discovered a Merle Norman store close by my University, and they got it in before Ulta!  I grabbed my boyfriend (he’s the best, because he actually agreed to shop for nail polish and make-up with me) and ran to the store to pick up “The Living Daylights” and “Live and Let Die”.

This is one coat of strategically placed “The Living Daylights” over one two coats of Zoya’s “Katherine”.

P.S.  I won a giveaway hosted by Midnite Manicures!!!  I was so excited because I rarely win anything, and this prize was something I really really wanted!  I have been trying to make jelly sandwiches for a very long time, and this prize was the Zoya Fall 2012 Gloss collection!  They are absolutely perfect for jelly sandwiches, and there are three beautiful colors!  Thank you Midnite Manicures!  Everyone should go over and follow her blog, Jeanie is so sweet!  I even got a really cute handwritten card in my prize package.  🙂

After letting the glitter dry, I put one more coat of Katherine over the top and TA-DA!  An absolutely perfect jelly sandwich!  And Katherine is actually the color of real jelly, so it kind of looks good enough to eat.

I got so many compliments on this manicure – people said it looked like there were rhinestones in my nail polish!  The only thing about a jelly sandwich is that it kind of covers up the true colors of the glitter, and in this case the teal, light pink, and silver colors of The Living Daylights were sacrificed.  But that’s okay!  Because I love the way it turned out!

What colors and glitters do you usually use to make your jelly sandwiches?  Do you like strawberry or grape jelly better?
Have a great rest of the week! 🙂

Moving on Up!

If you’re super in following and read nail polish/beauty blogs like me, you would have noticed that dozens of ladies (and some gents) are holding giveaways right now!  It’s getting closer to the holiday season, so Halloween and Christmas giveaways are just around the corner.

Also, if you follow Nails of Many Colors on Facebook (which you totally should) you would have noticed that I stated at 100 likes I would do a giveaway!  I’m not sure of the size of the giveaway, but it’s a giveaway nonetheless!  🙂

I’m at 76 likes right now…so it’s close!  Head on over, like the page, and spread the word!

I’m also getting more involved with sponsoring other giveaways on other blogs!  This way, we can all sort of link our blogs together and get the word out about more products and more points of view.  It’s really nice to be able to communicate with other nail bloggers too though, especially since I’m the only one I know of in my area.

I still have some really cool swatches to show you of fall polishes, like Pomegranate Nail Lacquer, OPI, 365 Days of Polish, and possibly some others as well!  Check back often and tell me what you think. 🙂

I hope your week has been going well, it’s almost over!

Vampire Diaries and Glitterbombs

Happy hump day!  Ahh, Wednesdays – the halfway point of the race to finish the work week as quickly as possible.

I personally hate Wednesdays.  I used to love them (because I just like the word ‘wednesday’) but not they are the most busy day of my week.  I get to sleep in until anytime before 12:30 p.m., but then I have class from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and then 4:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Then I have to do homework and get to bed as quickly as possible, because I have to wake up at 6:30 a.m. on Thursdays.  Boo.

On a side note, I am excited for this day to be over and tomorrow to be halfway over, because then I get to go home!  The season premiere of Vampire Diaries is on Thursday (YAY YAY YAY) and I’m going home to watch it with my sister.  Over the summer, we used our Netflix account to it’s full potential and caught up on several seasons of shows ranging from Breaking Bad to Gossip Girl, and luckily many of the shows are still on TV now and starting up again this fall!

I am OBSESSED with Vampire Diaries.  I love the story and the characters – and every episode breaks my heart and makes me want to keep watching.  So when I discovered that Dollish Polish sold a polish called “Team Salvatore” I rushed over to her website and placed an order without any hesitation.

First I’d like to note how healthy my naked nails are looking right now.  I’ve been using Sally Hansen’s Triple Strong and it is working wonders on my nails.  They rarely break, they are so strong, and the yellowish tint from wearing polish so often is disappearing!  I absolutely love it – it’s definitely my favorite.

I started off with a coat of one of my go-to fall polishes, OPI’s Black Cherry Chutney.  It is a dark, deep vampy red with a little bit of shimmer in the sun.  I chose it because it kind of looks black without being black, because there are black glitters in Team Salvatore and I wanted to try and show them off as much as possible.

Here is the beauty – Dollish Polish’s Team Salvatore.  I spent thirty minutes on her website clicking the “add to cart” button until I had two bottles in there, because it kept telling me that they were sold old.  I knew it wasn’t true, so I kept trying and my dreams came true!

A little bit closer up – there are fine silver glitters, small silver hexes, small red hexes, small black squares, and small red square glitters in here!  It is a mish-mash of vampiric colors that totally go along with the TV show.

And…picture spam.

Me taking pictures of my nails in three different environments: my room, the Alpha Phi house, and in class.
No big deal.

This polish is absolutely gorgeous.  I like how shimmery it is, and I love the red squares the most!  I want to try putting it over a white polish base, so that way you can see the black glitters too!  But…it’s fall and I’m trying to transition to dark colors, so I thought Black Cherry Chutney would be perfect.  🙂

How do you feel about this polish?  More importantly, are you Team Stefan or Team Damon?

OPI Announces 2013 Collection Collaboration with Who?!

Lately, OPI has been pairing up with several celebrities and collaborating on unique collections for their brand.  Just to name a few, they created the Katy Perry collection

the Nicki Minaj collection

and even the Minnie Mouse collection!

I was just informed this morning that OPI will now be doing a collaboration with Mariah Carey in January 2013!  I’m not surprised that Mariah Carey has caught the eye of OPI – she is a five time Grammy award winning global superstar and has had 18 Billboard number one singles!  OPI stated that they are “thrilled to work with Mariah” because she “loves nails and considers lacquer one of her favorite accessories”.  They plan on using their inspiration to create beautiful and bold colors, and I am so excited to see what they come up with!

There are no photos or even hints at possible names for the polishes yet, but I have a few ideas of my own.  First of all, these colors are going to be vampy, shimmery, and probably a couple of gorgeous divalicious glitters.  There has to be one polish named for her twin babies – that’s for sure.  There should also be one named after her number one hit “Always Be My Baby”.  Oh my gosh…”Always Be My Twin Babies”.  That’d be hilarious.

What do you think of OPI’s upcoming collaboration with Mariah Carey?  What kind of colors do you think it will be made up of?  Do you have any interesting possible names for the polishes?

OPI The Amazing Spiderman Collection

Yay!  Another new collection from my best friends at OPI!  This is the Amazing Spiderman Collection.

I have to admit when I saw these colors, I was not immediately interested because the colors are very different and not what I would normally wear.  But then I saw some swatches on Scrangie’s Site and I have to say that I would actually consider buying a couple of these colors.  Here are my favorites from the collection:

This deep blue is called Into the Night – a perfect name for the shade!  From this photo, it’s just a dark metallic blue that isn’t as dark as a dark blue…if that even makes any sense!

This color is Number One Nemisis.  To me, it looks like a grey-green metallic shimmer!
Perfect for the fall!  It’s not even summer yet and I’m already looking forward to fall and winter…

So what are your favorite colors from this collection?  Will you be rushing out to buy any of them?
Personally, I do like these two colors but there aren’t a shade that I would buy as soon as I saw them.  They aren’t must haves, like the colors in the Germany collection I talked about a while ago!  But then again…they are OPI polishes and they might surprise me like they always do!

OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps

Whoa whoa whoa…what?  OPI has just come out with a brand new line of nail apps!  They are 100% real nail polish and come in packs of 16 strips.  From what I have researched, they apply similar to any other nail polish strips, like the Sally Hansen ones for example.  They do come with a warning though – use them immediately because air will dry out the strips – which is something that I discovered with my Sally Hansen strips a little too late.

From top left to bottom right (in order of the numbers), Black & Grey Rattlesnake, Peacock, Fishnet, Parisian, Reptile, Floral, Pink & Black Lace, Metallic Wave, Sequins, Zig Zag Sparkle, Geometric Sparkle, Gold Lace, Pink and Silver Lace, and Girly Glam.

All of these patterns are very classy and interesting!  A lot of them are also something that could not be easily done by hand, which is good!  What is the point of buying nail polish strips if you could just as easily do it freehand?

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for these nail strips.  I absolutely love OPI and all of their products – they have never disappointed me.  Yay OPI!  🙂

Oh, You Trendy, Huh?

Now I may not be a nail polish expert, but I shop for polish enough to know what’s in and what’s out.  I would never deem a certain type or color of nail polish “out”, more like under the radar, waiting to come out and have it’s turn in the spotlight again.

Spring has sprung, but where I live I can’t even tell.  At the moment it is gloomy and pouring rain and it is supposed to be that way all week.  I don’t mind the rain too much, but it isn’t too color inspiring for nail art!  Regardless, I have still been paying attention to what polishes are trendy for Spring 2012.  I’ve given up buying nail polish for lent (like I think I have said before) but I still check out what my local shops are currently selling every time I go shopping.  So here’s a little rundown of what I have noticed so far!

Nudes: Nudes have become extremely popular.  A lot of different shades fall into the category of “nude”, and they are all unique in their own way.

However, nudes can be difficult to shop for.  Here is a collection featured on Zoya’s website.  It is called the “Touch Collection”, and it is made up of three different shades of nude – “Minka”, “Shay”, and “Pandora” (not in the same order as the image above).  This was a really smart idea on Zoya’s part, because with three different nudes most of their customers can find a shade that complements their skin tone.  I have not taken a dive into the “nude” pool yet, or should I say, gone skinny dipping.  My skin color is more of an olive/yellow shade so finding a polish that doesn’t look like someone got sick on my nails proves to be quite difficult.  I found this site though: Your Nude Nail Polish Guide and it has very detailed advice on how to find the perfect shade for your skin.  Have you gone into the “nude” territory yet?  What’s your favorite nude shade this spring?

Corals: This beautiful shade of orangey-pink is popping up everywhere.  I am constantly seeing it on runways, in stores, and even on other girls’ nails!  Depending on the shade you pick out, your coral could be bright and flashy or muted and pastel.  I think that Essie has a beautiful selection of corals.

This color is called “Tart Deco”.  I am trying to get my hands on this color as soon as I can.  It is a beautiful, light coral color that would complement tan spring/summer skin on anyone!

“Braziliant” is a bright coral that leans more toward the orange side of the spectrum.  I could also seen this on some super tan skin!

This cute pinky coral is called “Mango Bango”, and it’s another one that I want to own!

The brightest coral of the bunch: “Orange It’s Obvious”.  This is still considered a coral, even though it looks super orange.  This is perfect for the sunny weather, which I am looking forward to!

Teals and Pistachios: I am so happy to see this color really becoming more popular!  When I first starting really getting into nail polish, I strayed from blues and greens but now I can’t get enough of them!

This is my absolute favorite light blue, China Glaze’s “For Audrey”.  It’s a tiffany blue, which has a little bit of teal/green in it.  I love to layer it under glitters and flakes, but now that it’s Spring, I’ll be sporting it plain!

This is just the cutest Spring color ever!  Essie’s “Poised and Polished” just reminds me of a field of flowers!  It would be super cute under some hot pink and purple polka dots!

Hot Pinks and Neons: Hot pink always seems to be a trend in the Spring and Summer.  It’s basically a classic – a staple item for any nail polish lover!  If you don’t have a hot pink in your collection, I would highly recommend China Glaze’s “Pool Party”!

I have also seen a lot of neon yellow…not a color I plan on wearing anytime soon, but hey, there’s a time and a place for everything!

Effects: There are so many new polishes coming out that have special effects to them!  My favorite right now is Essie’s “Shine of the Times”, a flakie that changes colors in the sun!  This will definitely be something I might need to buy another bottle of during the summer…

I know this is from last fall’s Orly Mineral FX collection, but this is what I’m talking about.  Polishes that are just packed full of different shimmers and sparkles and things that make it unique!  This is “Rococo A Go Go”…and my Bucket of Polish list keeps growing.

One of the last trends I am going to talk about is the nail art trend.  This trend has been going on for a while and I don’t see it stopping any time soon.  It seems like everyday there is a new nail art trend that everyone is trying – from newspaper nails to half moons to ruffian…it’s never ending!  I am excited to see what emerges this spring with all of the bright and unique colors that are coming out!

I am completely aware that some of you may not agree with what I believe the Spring trends are this year, so this is where I want to hear what you have to say!  What do you think the trends are for this Spring?  What colors will you be wearing, regardless of if they’re “in” or “out”?  Let me know!

P.S.  Keep your eyes out tomorrow for a new nail art tutorial!  I’ve been planning this one all week! 🙂

OPI’s Germany Collection

L to R: My Very First Knockwurst, Don't Pretzel My Buttons, Berlin There Done That, Dont Talk Bach to Me, Nein! Nein! Nein! OK Fine!, Schnapps Out of It, Suzi & The 7 Dusseldorfs, Every Month is Oktoberfest, Unfor-greta-bly Blue, Deutche You Want Me Baby, Danke-Shiny Red & German-icure by OPI.

Oh.  My.  Gosh.  Somebody needs to get me some water because I think I’m about to pass out.

OPI just announced their Fall 2012 collection via their official Facebook page.  It says, “Creamy neutrals. Rich jewel tones. Pull out your lederhosen, because this Fall OPI is taking you back to Europe with the Germany Collection by OPI!”

This collection literally has it all: nude, pastel, shimmer, light color, dark color (which we all know I love), blue, red, yellow, orange…the list could go on forever.  In my opinion this is one of the few OPI Collections I think I would buy every single shade from.  Every color looks unique and absolutely gorgeous.  The Holland Collection from this Spring/Summer has some really great colors as well, but I favor dark colors and shades that don’t have a shimmer.  That being said, I also need to get my hands on some Holland Colors!  Specifically “I Have a Herring Problem”, “Kiss Me On My Tulips”, “A Roll in the Hague”, “Gouda Gouda Two Shoes”…maybe it’s a good thing I gave up buying nail polish for lent…

Just from this photo, my favorites are “Don’t talk Bach to Me”, “Nein! Nein! Nein! OK Fine!”, “Schnapps Out of It”, “Suzi & The 7 Dusseldorfs”, “Every Month is Oktoberfest”, and “German-icure”.  I don’t think I can wait until Fall!  There is no question about it: I will definitely be getting most of this collection, if not all of it!  I’d love to do a swatch post of them as well!  I’ve never done one before, and a thoroughly beautiful collection would be a great place to start.  OPI, you did well.

In other news, I bought myself a new laptop!  It’s a Macbook Pro, and so far I’m in love.  I am still trying to get used to the different keystrokes and a very different keyboard, but it’s so pretty and I’m really glad I got it.  I’ve already named him Sawyer, and I refer to him as my boyfriend because he is always with me and he is just so handsome and shiny and new.  Yeah, I might be a little too excited.  I’ve been working two jobs for about a year now saving up for him, so I think I have a right to be excited!

Now that I have a fully functioning laptop, you can expect more blog posts from me more often.  Get excited!

What colors do you like from OPI’s Germany Collection?  Which ones are your Fall 2012 must-haves?

Long Awaited Glitter Gradient Tutorial

Finally! A quick little tutorial! It’s supposed to rain all week so I guess you could say I’ve been inspired. As usual, I’m still stuck in my dark colors phase, so what I have for you now is a glitter gradient that kind of looks like rain falling! Let’s get started!

Here are the two polishes I’m using. The first is just Wet N’ Wild “Black Creme”, and the second is a mini version of OPI’s “Last Friday Night” from the Katy Perry collection.

I know that this is messy and kind of hard to see, but use a very thin coat of your glitter and cover about 75% of your nail. You can do it starting from the bottom or from the top!

Do another thin coat of glitter but only cover 50% of your nail.

Finally, do one more glitter coat only at the tip of your nail. Now it should look like the glitter is getting thicker as it goes up your nail!

After some cleaning up and a top coat…

Yay! To me it looks like rain, but I was told today it looks kind of like the galaxy! Hope you love it as much as I do!
